San Jose is by far the most priciest place to buy a home, even among 10 other metro areas where qualifying income exceeds $200,000. Some of the wealthiest people in the U.S. live in cities like San Jose, San Francisco and Anaheim. In contrast to California's most expensive markets, the qualifying income needed to buy a typical home in the U.S. overall is $103,835. It's even cheaper in the Midwest and the South, where the qualifying income is $74,967 and $95,511, respectively.

Experts agree that buying a home can be a great way to build wealth, but achieving that goal can be challenging. In a January report, RealtyHop looked at the number of years it takes to save up for a down payment in the 100 most populated U.S. cities. RealtyHop collected the median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau, assumed that a household saves 20% of its annual gross income each year and then calculated the number of years it takes to save up for a down payment using 20% of the median asking price (the cost of a typical down payment) and the amount saved annually.

The vast majority of the wealthiest Americans live in California and New York, residing in ZIP codes where homes typically cost around $2 million or more, a new study reveals. Of the 100 most expensive ZIP codes to own a home in the U.S., 61 are in California and 18 are in New York, according to an analysis by online realtor RealtyHop. The median listing price for a home in the 10 most expensive ZIP codes is $4 million or more. For the fourth straight year, Atherton, California, is the most expensive ZIP code in the U.S. to own a home, the study says. In December, RealtyHop released its Housing Affordability Index. The study examined the 100 most populated cities in the U.S. to provide an index of housing affordability and homeownership burden. Miami, Florida, topped the list as the least affordable housing market in the U.S. The city saw a 0.50% increase in the median asking price for a home from $595,000 to $598,000. According to RealtyHop, a family making Florida's average household income of $44,581 would have to spend 85.67% of their paycheck on housing costs.

Homes cost more than $4 million in the most expensive in greater New York- and Los Angeles-area neighborhoods, with Sagaponack, New York, leading the pack, according to an analysis that compared the nation's two largest metropolises. The median price for a home in the tony Hamptons enclave costs $6,972,500, according to online realtor RealtyHop. That's followed closely by 90210, perhaps the most famous ZIP code in the U.S. due to the popular TV show "Beverly Hills, 90210." Homes in this part of Beverly Hills cost $6,699,500. In third place is Water Mill, one of the five Hamptons ZIP codes in the top 10 rankings, which are listed below.
The Hamptons dominate the rankings for the most expensive neighborhood in the Northeast, with Sagaponack, New York, taking the top spot. A beachside village that's home to Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, Sagaponack is second only to Atherton, California for most expensive U.S. ZIP code in 2022, in terms of median value for homes, according to data provided by realty service RealtyHop. The second most expensive Northeast ZIP code is in Boston's Back Bay area. It's a small area for a ZIP code, consisting of only a few blocks of luxury condos next to the Prudential Center. Homes in these ZIP codes are close to $6 million.

The wealthiest neighborhood in the South is Fisher Island, an exclusive 216-acre island a couple miles off the coast of Miami — and it's only accessible by helicopter or by boat. With less than 400 residents, $90 million condos and an exclusive golf course, Fisher Island ranks first in terms of median home values, according to a recent analysis of ZIP codes by realty service RealtyHop. Homes here cost a median of $6.1 million — more than double the amount you'd pay for almost all of the homes in the rest of the top 10 most expensive ZIP codes in the South. That's followed by two other small, beachfront neighborhoods, including Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, near Charleston Harbor, and Anna Maria, Florida, near Tampa, which have homes closer to a median value of $3 million. Near Stanford University, and home of tech executives and venture capitalists, Atherton has resisted development of multifamily properties, which has kept homes large and exclusive. In second place is Sagaponack, New York, an enclave of a few hundred residents in the Hamptons, followed by the posh Bel Air neighborhood in Los Angeles. Third place is perhaps the most famous ZIP code in the U.S.: 90210 — namesake of the '90s teen melodrama "Beverly Hills, 90210."
